A NOTE FROM THE CURATOR
Bacalar Lagoon, at the southern end of Quintana Roo, is perhaps one of the most breathtaking landscapes in all of Mexico —
and at the same time, one of the most delicate ecosystems on the planet.
Along its shores live stromatolites: structures formed by microorganisms that have existed on Earth for more than 3.5 billion years,
considered among the oldest living organisms known to science.
They are, quite literally, part of the origin of life as we know it. And they are extraordinarily fragile.
Because of its unique beauty, Bacalar has increasingly attracted the attention of travelers and investors alike.
This raises an uncomfortable but necessary question:
What kind of development do we want to see in Bacalar?
Too many mistakes have already been made elsewhere in the Mexican Caribbean.
As an emerging destination, Bacalar represents a rare opportunity not to repeat them —
an opportunity to promote a model of development that first seeks to understand the ecosystem in which it exists,
and from that understanding, create an authentic integration that supports the well-being of its residents and local community
while preserving the region’s most valuable asset:
its natural environment.
This project was born from exactly that intention.
A low environmental footprint, responsible wastewater management,
harmonious integration with the surrounding ecosystem,
and a wellness-centered experience that is only possible
when nature has not been sacrificed in order to create it"
